Built after the 1527, by Rodrigo Gil de Liendo. The interrupted work, wasretaken in the 1530 and could be terminated allegedly in 1555, by assistanceof Carlos V. Parents who arrived in the second voyage of Columbus, broughtthe box of the Virgen de las Mercedes, donated by Queen Elizabeth, imageplaced in the shovel of the altar.

 Deteriorated it the Corsair Francis Drake in 1586, and the 1615 and 1628cyclones destroyed the roof.

The ship, was restored in the 1635 by Pedro de Portillo, who built the towerand restores the vault, with two arches in blocks, the bases of the facadeand the frontispiece.

In the 1673 the dome of the Chapel is humbled by the earthquake.

  

In the 1678 is credited with Pedro de la Rosa, the construction of the sidedoor andthe North Tower, heavy structure, perfectly square 27 m high,between their campaigns a battleship Menphis, shipwrecked on the ante isport during a tornado on 29 August 1916.

In the Church lived between 1615 and the 1618 Fray Gabriel Tellez, moreknown asTirso de Molina, author of more than 300 comedies, who died inSoria in the 1648. Of great importance for the Dominicans as N. S. de lasMercedes is the patron saintof the island.

 

More than 400 years of history hide them walls of this temple religious, a church with charms to conquer couples that in many occasions it choose to join their lives in the sacred marriage, covered low the image of the Virgin.

The Church Las Mercedes was the firstseminar of America, and also served as a monastery, which at the same time served as a home to religious. There was one of themajor cults of thecolonial era. Today the only Temple is limited to perform masses every Sunday and Las Mercedes day processions, which are held every September 24.

Santiago Batista, pastor of the entity religious, has that many couples prefer this church for contracting marriage by the style and the structure of this temple, that keeps their charms colonial, and because come in it Virgin of them Mercedes “the mother spiritual that seeks guide that union”.
