The beauty of the rose of Bayahibe

 The Dominican national flower or pereskia quisqueyana, of the family of cacti and it is one of the few cactus with leaves, reaches up to six meters in height, is in danger of extinction, is endemic to Bayahibe, La Altagracia  The beauty ofBayahibe rose dazzled by itscolour and its delicate petals.
Name scientific: Pereskiaquisqueyana.
Discovered in 1977 by the French botanist Alain Liogier in Bayahibe andwas declared a new species to science in 1980. After years of research and exploration by biologists of the National Botanic Garden, they only found exemplary males (with male flowers), so the reproduction of the plant must have done by cuttings or stake.
Although they had beautiful flowers did not have fruit, so it could not start their sexual reproduction, their thorns did that at first people cut them, for that reason hardly were those that were in the Church of Bayahibe and the botanical, where reproduced naturally. Many hotels in Bayahibe and Bávaro and Uvero Alto adopted it and reproduced.

Five years ago was discovered plants females of Bayahibe rose in a secluded area, was important finding for the botanical technicians, more still because they were flowering and frutificadas. Began long-awaited sexualreproduction which would ensureitsgenetic variability
It was regrettable that the owners of the place don’t understood the importance of the plant for science, the specimens were cut.
However, the botanical then hit his campaign of conservation between the community, and hotels and now have it as plant emblem of the community.Hotels take careof it and have played it enough.”
The pink of Bayahibe is unique in the world, only exists in Dominican Republic, although others of the family Pereskia exist in others places, but this plant in its environment natural only is located in the country. It is one of the rare cactus because it has leaves, has a pretty flower, but which is in danger of extinction and was on the verge of disappearance.

The plant can be grown anywhere with proper environment. Although you need water, the soil must not be saturated. Whether on land or pot, Peguerorecommendedplanting it in soil when the roots penetrate find whereanchoring, by placing them stone or gravel to drain the waterThe plant,which flowers since it reaches 1.5 or 2 meters, has two blooms a year,usually in the first months of the year and in other times.
In Bayahibe is called mata of chele because the fruit has inside a tiny form, which indicates that Bayahíbe’s community known populations of females of the plant.
The petals of the flower are usually measured 2.2 cm long.

The rose of Bayahibe, whichreplaces the mahogany as nationalflower flower, will be shown in neweditions of the paper currency of thecountry.
Alain Liogier died in 2009 to them 93years. He was living in Texas.
