Altos de Chavón.- Is a village ofancient Mediterranean type built at aheight above the river Chavon in theDominican Republic. It is headquartersof a Cultural Centre, the NationalArchaeological Museum, and the so-called City of artists. It also has aremarkable Amphitheater.
Its construction began in 1976 when theopening of a road was needed todestroy astone mountain. CharlesBludhorn, Chairman of an Americancompany, had the ideaof using stonesto build a Mediterranean village in the 16th century. The popular rumor saysthat he did it to give it to his daughter on her birthday, but that it often lives inAltos de Chavón, denies this version
The construction was entrusted to the Italian Roberto Copa who reflected amedieval Italian town. The Chavón River, on which the city has amagnificent panoramic view, it was the setting chosen for the recording ofsome famous films. Villa are currently receiving thousands of hits a day fromtourists moved from Punta Cana.
Altos de Chavón has a school of design, in which you will find fashiondesign, graphic and Digital, fine arts and illustration.
That have the interim program, which is 2 times per year; in spring andsummer. These programs are divided into 2–week technical courses, taughtby the same professors invited artists of the school.
The school of design is affiliated with Parsons School of design in New Yorkand other design schools in France and Japan. At its official opening in1982, Frank Sinatra and Carlos Santana were artists invited to inaugurate.
Since its inception, Altos de Chavón was open to public, allowing them (as)Dominicans and foreigners enjoy its streets, its sights and restaurants. It wasalways a placepar excellence to show our friends and visitors coming to thecountry. That free access to Chavon is today no longer has since they have restricted visits tothe place with charging an entrance fee that fewpeople understand or are willing topay (in dollars).

The amphitheatre is an iconic symbolof Altos de Chavón and Casa deCampo, is theAltos ChavonAmphitheater designed by the Italianartist Roberto Copa in 1976andopened in 1982 with the concert“Concert for the Americas“ (concert forthe Americas) with Frank Sinatra,Buddy Rich, Heart and CarlosSantana, on August 20 of that year.
In this Amphitheater with capacity formore than 5,000 people, has been dozen national artists and internments ofgreat importance, among which we can mention.
