The Museum of the Royal houses or Royal palaces, as itwas called during the colonial era, had to host two palaces, which date back to the 16th century. This Royal Palace was built on the orders of the Spanish Crown, under the reign of Fernando II of Aragon, the 5 October 1511, in order to accommodate the main government officesof the time.
This was called as building of the Royal houses, since it was the Royal Court, whichwas the first court of the new world, was also used as a residence of the Governors and General captains of the era, the second it was called as a captaincy General.
This building served as the dwelling place of many important characters, as they were perhaps Bartolomé Colón, Louis Ferrand, among others.
In the halls of the Royal Court held important meetings or parties comprising the leading figures in the colonial era as well as the official Royal Society and judges of appeal. Participants were also the Bishops of Concepción, Don Pedro Suárez de Deza,and representatives Franciscans, Dominicans and Mercedarians, besides the own enconmendaderos.
La Real Audiencia formally exercised jurisdiction over all neighboring islands, including Cuba, Puerto Rico, and Jamaica, and also on the firm ground of the ocean sea, ashe was known then, reaching its greatest importance between the years 1526 and 1540. Also since there were discussed the main issues, as they were the rebellion Enriquillo, rebellion of the Indians of Cuzco, establish the differences between Alvaradoand Almagro, seeking how to solve territorial problems in Central America, Venezuela and Florida and Louisiana, among others...
The Museo de las Casas Reales is historical, as it features colonial architecture. On October 18, 1973, during the Government de el presidente Dr. Joaquín Balaguer, wasestablished as a Museum, but it was not until 31 May of 1976, which is officially recognized by the laws of the country as a Dominican National Museum, which was registered under the Act 580. The opening ceremony was King Juan Carlos I de España.
This museum was created to collect and provide to highlight the history, life and customs of the inhabitants of the Spanish during the colonial era. Today is one of themost visited and popular by tourists in Santo Domingo, since it is located in the Zona Colonial.
