The Basilica

Our Lady of Altagracia

The Basilica was built to replace an ancientshrine, where it appeared La Altagracia,whichdates from 1572. The Basilica began to build in1954, on the orders of the first bishop ofHiguey, Monsignor Juan Félix Pepén, whichlasted 17 years for its construction.

On January 21, 1971 is inaugurated thecurrent Basilica, in charge of the thenPresident Dr. Joaquín Balaguer. On 12October of the same year, it was declared asmonument Dominican, and on 17 October ofthe same year Pope Pablo VI declares it as a minor Basilica. Two years later, on August 15,1973 becomes Cathedral of the Diocese of our Lady of la Altagracia in Higüey, by Apostolic mandate.

The Basilica was built in the Centre of the city, with a Latin cross–shapedstructure, the front door is made of bronze with a bath of 24–carat gold,also has a Bell Towerof 45 bronze bells. The most notable detail of itsarchitecture are the elongated arches, representing the figure of our Ladyof Altagracia with his hands in an attitude ofprayer. At the top of thehighest arch originally had a cross, which presumably wasuprooted byhurricane David.

  

From Rome, the Basilica was blessed by Pope John Paul II himself andon October 12, 1992, in his second visit to the country, the Pope JuanPablo II personally crownedthe image of La Altagracia with a headband insilver, and also took the opportunity to personally blessed the Basilica andall the people of the Dominican Republic.

 

Today, it is one of the shrines or religious temples in the country and mostvisited Latin America, not only by the inhabitants of the country, but alsoby many foreigners. The Basilica is the image of La Altagracia, which wasthe first evangelizer of America and the new world.

Higuey, official name of basilica Cathedral basilica of our Lady of laAltagracia, is amodern Catholic shrine located in the city of Salvaleón ofHigüey, in the Dominican Republic. It is the Cathedral of the Diocese ofour Lady of la Altagracia in Higüey and one of the most visited sanctuariesof the Caribbean.

The advocation possibly comes fromthe Spanish village of AlconétarGarrovillas (Caceres), although alsoaims at Siruela (Badajoz). Bothpopulations have the VirginofAltagracia, as patron and twochapels dedicated to it. Other datapointing to the Extremadura region isthat Nicolas de Ovando was born inBrozas (Garrovillas distant 10 km)and also served as Commander of Lares (11 km distant of Siruela) beforereaching the Spanish Governor of the Indies in the year 1502.

The work of the basilica of Higuey or our Lady  of  la Altagracia, was builtby French architects André-Jacques Dunoyer de Segonzac and PierreDupré, which were chosenthrough an international competition announceden1947, but took place in 1949, in which the proposal of theaforementioned architects was chosen.

It is the Cathedral of the Diocese of our Lady of la Altagracia in Higüeyand one of the most visited sanctuaries of the Caribbean.
