Folklore in Dominican Republic

The Vega is one of the 31 provinces ofthe Dominican Republic. With an areaof 2,287 km2, is almost in the center ofthe Dominican Republic. Under thename of “La Vega”, was one of the fiveoriginal provinces created by theConstitution of San Cristobal in 1844.It is currently divided into fourmunicipalities: Concepción de LaVega, provincial head, Constanza,Jarabacoa and Jima down.

Eight provinces border, to greater or lesser extent, with the province of LaVega: Azua, San José de Ocoa, Monsenor Nouel, Sánchez Ramírez,Duarte, Hermanas Mirabal,Espaillat, Santiago and San Juan.

     

Acts of Carnival.

 Coming from Spain and which takes place before the start of lent butovertime is has been partnering more to the national holidays of February 27 andAugust 16; 

the cimarron, which is usually held in the last days of Holy week. It originatesfrom African traditions.

While the shrovetide Carnival is celebrated throughout the country, alsoassociatedwith the holidays, the Maroons carnivals are held where weremore common wherethere were movements Maroons during the Spanishcolonization. Sebastian Baez was the founder of the idea of the Carnivalwhile you towards a guachipota and gavea pass

     

Since the shrovetide Carnival is which has had more broadcast and that it ismade more propaganda, some of African origin have been moving the dateto match themwith the European type.   It also happens with losGuloyas ofSan Pedro de Macoris and other parts of the East of the country.   TheGuloyas are street representations of biblical events that were onlypreviously presented at Christmas time; It is a traditionbrought by immigrantsfrom the British Lesser Antilles (the cocolo) by using musicalinstruments thatare not used in other carnivals in the country.

There is also a Haitian influences, especially in some characters.Robalagallina, one of the most popular characters in Carnival in honor ofhomosexuality, was developedduring the Haitian occupation and had itsorigin in the city of La Vega; It also appears in the Carnival in Jacmel,Haiti. But the most common character, with all its variations, is the Diablocojuelo (sometimes called Devil cajuelo). It retains that name in La Vegawhile that in Salcedo and Bonao are called Macaraos; in Santiago de losCaballeros, piglets, etc.2

During the Carnival in Dominican Republic appear in masquerades “piglet”,men disguised with large multicolorados silk costumes, with “preciousstones” and glassesglued everywhere. The piglets “jewellers” mask are evenmore decorated, and carrynumerous bells. Frightening masks “piglets”representing

The Pepines are the ones with more mouth similar to the of the donald duck(with wide flattened peak), topped with two large Bull‘s horns (horns of thethe masks “jewellers” look excrescences coralliformas). They have the torsoclosely tight by a belt “in the form of sausage”. They wiggle, jump and dancewith the feminine, the robalagallinas figures. These (according to statueslocated at the foot of the monument to the Heroes, in the eminencesenoreando the center of Santiago, with explanatory tombstones exposingalong its role in Dominican folk traditions) are classicamente oftwo distincttypes: the “simple” is a beautiful, thin girl who wears long skirt, WaSP waisttight in a corset, hair in mono and umbrella – while the “exaggerated” is obese ,and has huge banister and broad vertugado, both false attractionsoften than atrahen the groping and “piglet” kicks… But now the“robagallinas” thin look swimwear and large plume of feathers to the fashiongirls from Rio de Janeiro, and the leadingskirt (both the thin and the“exaggerated”) are often disguised as men.

  

At the end of the 19th century, many families emigrated from Cuba due tothe warof liberation in that country. The vast majority of these families wereleft to live in cities of the North and center of the Dominican Republic: PuertoPlata, Santiago, La Vega.     They brought their Cuban Customs, includingthe comparsas Cuban, being veryfamous troupes such as La Culebra fromSan Blas, La Vega and the dance of the Cayman and bold Conga in PuertoPlata and other parts of the Northwest line.
