San Juan de la Maguana, is the headmunicipality and capital of theprovince of SanJuan, in the Westernregion of the Dominican Republic.
It was one of the first cities foundedin the island; It was founded in 1503and was given the name of San Juande la Maguana by San Juan Bautistaand the Taíno name for the Valley:Maguana.
Geography
San Juan de la Maguana is in the center of the San Juan Valley, the oldTaino Maguana, with the Cordillera Central (“Central Mountain range”) to theNorth and East, and the Sierra de Neiba South. To the West there is a chainof low hills.
The San Juan River is the main river of the region and the city was foundedon the left (East) of this river.

Arriving in Trujillo power, gets your attention in the common of San Juan dela Maguana and for 1938 elevates it to category of province, named after Benefactor. Appropriates an enormous amount of fertile land (1,110,250.53task), being the portion of larger land possessing family Trujillo in thecountry, appearing on behalf of MaríaMartínez VDA Trujillo (38,109). OnceTrujillo shows interest in ‘province’, that was not the only one, wereimportant works from 1940, such as: Hotel Maguana, the courthouse, the oldconvent of nuns and church schools; all these constructions in the vicinity ofthe Arc de Triomphe, which had been inaugurated on 1st January 1939, dayin which began the category of province Benefactor. They were also builtfrom the Decade of 1940, the old market, the glorieta municipal and 3 majorbridges on the road of Azua – after the bridge over the South Yaque RiverBridge–: Apple, Jinova andmillet, as well as the bridge over the San JuanRiver to the West of the city.
The first aqueduct was built in the 40s and the electrical system wasinstalled. For the Decade of 1950 the two most important schools of the cityare built in those moments: the Mercedes Consuelo Matos and Francisco deRosario Sánchez, on the land that had acquired the Town Hall. With theconstruction of these works and the building of the Town Hall and theHospital Dr. Alejandro Cabral, begins the urban development of the easternpart of the city.
Towards the Northeast is directed the growth of the city in 1962 when “is thefirst low–cost housing project at the entrance of Mogollon” (Id) in charge ofthe INVI called Ensanche La Fe. Before this housing project, the cityreached the street Sunday Rodriguez and there was need to open thestreets Dr. Cabral and Mariano RodríguezObjío, who only came up to thecalle Caonabo. From this opening began a processof urbanization in thisarea, with the participation of the private sector.
