The Monastery of San Francisco, Zona Colonal
was one of the wonderful works of Nicolasde Ovando, which began its constructionwhen the arrival of the Franciscan fathers,en1508.It was the first monastery in thenew world, some time later, was hit by ahurricane.
The main part of the Church is initiated byLiendo in 1544 on a hill and completedJuly 23, 1556. �� In 1586 wassacked by the English pirate Francis Drake, and then startsagain repair, whichwas completed in 1664, but according to historians, in 1673 and1751, twoearthquakes, which caused damage to the architecture of the monasteryofSan Francisco are produced.
According to historians, at the main entrance of the monastery, was buriedAlonso de Ojeda. Some time later, were transferred his remains to theformer Dominican convent on 12 October 1942, in the same place wherewere found in 1892. The remainsof Bartolom� Col�n were also found.
During the battle of Palo Hincado, against the French, began theirdestruction and besieged in the town they located a piece of artillery on theroof in 1805 and in 1809is cut off the dome, and is instead placed anesplanade of wood with a cannon thatcollapsed with ceiling to the secondshot.
During the domination of the Haitian 1822-1844, in 1831 these are stonesand architectural detail and in 1847 become to used on walls as constructionmaterial.
Much of the building is destroyed during the passage of the cyclone SanZen�n in 1930, and in 1940 was installed there the procomio and the PadreBillini Madhouse. The bells of San Francisco are that launched the gruntlament of the Bell Tower of Santa Barbara.
In the surroundings of the monastery of San Francisco, there are still ruins ofthe chapel of the third order Garay or Mar�a Toledo. Through his tub, isdistributed in all piping the water to the inhabitants of the Zona Colonial,even was the first city aqueduct. Currently, these ruins are used for socialand cultural events and is cared for and protected by law and by thepermanent National Commission of ephemeris homelands of the Dominican Republic.�
